Preventing Shingles

WHAT IS SHINGLES?
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by reactivation of
the virus that causes chickenpox.
Your risk for shingles increases as you age.

1 out of 3 people in the US will get shingles.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT SHINGLES?
SHINGRIX is a vaccine to boost your body’s immune system for adults 50 years and
older.
Shingrex is a 2-dose series, with the second shot administered 2 to 6 months after the
first shot.
To ensure you get the protection against shingles offered by SHINGRIX, it’s important to
get both shots.

WHAT IF I ALREADY GOT A SHINGLES VACCINE?
You still need the new 2-step vaccine for additional protection against shingles.

WHAT ABOUT SIDE EFFECTS?
You may experience side effects after each dose.
Remember the side effects are much less severe than getting shingles.
