Community Service Project

Eight eager sophomore students left Chief Leschi at 9 a.m. on May 22, with four Quest advisors along to help out. The students of every class level are required to perform some type of community service each year as part of their graduation check list. The students were offered to participate as a group, and sand bagging a Leschi family’s property against the Puyallup River was chosen. Long time employee and tribal member Berta Lopez was the beneficiary of the students’ charitable efforts. Read more...

Youth Leadership Challenge

Five Chief Leschi students; Wynonna Swift, Katarina Johnson, Leeann Martinez, Redmorning Eagle Peters, and Patricia Gonzalez-Montanez; have been accepted to attend the 2nd Annual Bureau of Indian Education Summer Youth Leadership Challenge at Haskell Indian Nations University, in Lawrence, Kansas, June 6 through 11, 2010. Students had to apply to be accepted, and the application process was rigorous. Students were asked to write two essays. One asked students to identify four major areas; economics, education, social programs, cultural activities, language program or other relevant topics that their tribe is involved in that positively influences their lives. The other essay asked students identify what they think are the top four challenges that their tribe faces and possible solutions. Read more...


Science News

The morning of May 18 was overcast and windy but an intrepid group of students and staff ventured onto research boat the Indigo for a day at sea. Superintendent Ray Lorton was a special guest and interacted with the students and shared some of his thoughts about growing up around salt water. After a short talk about safety the science group left the dock for a day of adventure. The weather immediately improved and the sun peaked out occasionally. The students were broken into three groups and rotated through three work stations. Boat crew members led two of the stations. The first station taught about what to do if someone falls overboard and knot tying was also covered. Some kids really struggled with ropes and knots. The second stop was riding with the Captain in the pilot house. Each student was allowed at least 10 minutes at the wheel to pilot the boat. They were instructed on how to use the electronics on board: depth charts, channel markers, the GPS system and navigating. Read more...

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium and Chief Leschi Schools have been working together to offer fun opportunities to our students. Recently the Zoo came to Chief Leschi and presented a ZooM Outreach Program to elementary students attending the 21st century after-school program. Read more...


Princess reflects on her time as daffodil royalty

Crystal Daniels, Chief Leschi’s 2010 Daffodil Princess, found her place amidst a sea of bright yellow flowers and smiling faces on parade day. On April 10, Crystal Daniels rode the Daffodil Princess float through four parades: Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting. “The parade was by far the best part of my experience as a princess,” she says.
