On Dec. 7, 2009 State Super-intendent Randy Dorn visited Chief Leschi Schools (CLS) to meet with school leaders, visit classes, observe Elementary Circle, and gain a better understanding of how a successful, tribal school educational program operates in Washington State.

Randy Dorn’s visit was arranged by Ehren Flygare (Advocates, Inc.), a Puyallup Tribal lobbyist and supported by Denny Hurtado, Director of

Indian Education for the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).  The visit was a result of a meeting with tribal school leaders in September 2009, when Randy Dorn expressed the desire to see a strong tribal school in person.

During Randy Dorn’s meeting with CLS leaders, discussion centered on state funding issues in harsh economic times, the common problems of public schools and tribal schools, and how his office (OSPI) could work collaboratively with tribal schools to ensure quality education for all Native American students in Washington State.

After spending the better part of the morning visiting classrooms, participating in Elementary Circle and touring the campus, he again met with administrators, instructional coaches, and key school staff. Randy Dorn indicated that he was impressed with all that he had observed in his tour, especially reading and math classes. He enjoyed seeing such a culturally rich environment and the activities of Elementary Circle in particular.

Upon leaving CLS, Randy Dorn was gifted by elementary and secondary culture program students and invited to return to visit whenever he would like to.

Randy Dorn will again meet with Washington State tribal school leaders later this month. At that time, CLS Superintendent Ray Lorton will work to set a firm date for another visit to our campus as it is our desire to develop a strong, working relationship with Randy Dorn and OSPI.
