The Chinooks won the title in the 9 and under boys division of Northwest Youth Sports Alliance. The team from Puyallup Tribal Youth Center defeated the Leopards 8-1 on Nov. 15 at South End Recreation Area in Tacoma.
Felipe Corall got the Chinooks on the scoreboard when he put a penalty kick past the Leopards’ goalie. Soon after he scored on a shot from about 30 feet out.
Coach Sarah Steiner said she usually put Felipe Corall in at forward in the beginning of the game, then would move him to the backfield later in the game to let other players have a shot at scoring.
She was impressed with how her team moved the ball upfield. “We have some really good forwards. They definitely have their ball work down,” she said.
Many of the players had prior soccer experience. For others this was their first season playing the sport.
Winning the division title was a fitting reward for their hard work this season, according to Sarah Steiner. “They were really excited about it. The boys showed a willingness to work hard,” she said. “They took direction well and played well as a team. They really worked together well.”
A key to their success was knowing how to get open and be ready for a pass. “They responded very well to that,” the coach said. “None of them are greedy with the ball. They are a good group of boys.”
