Puyallup Tribal Youth Center’s first foray into tackle football went well in the 2008 season, with its team the Future Hawks taking third place in the 12 and under age division of the Northwest Youth Sports Alliance. The Future Hawks wrapped up their season with a 20-6 victory over the Gig Harbor Tides on Nov. 1 at Art Crate Field in Spanaway in a playoff game to determine third place and fourth place in the division.

The Future Hawks got on the scoreboard when Ashanti Kindle scored a touchdown in the first half. They took a 7-0 lead into the locker room.

The second half began with the Tides attempting an onside kick that was recovered by the Future Hawks.

The Future Hawks were pinned deep in their own territory early in the third quarter after a Gig Harbor punt, taking possession at their own 8. After a third and long pass fell incomplete, the Future Hawks took a time out. They took a risk in going for it on fourth and nine and again were unable to complete a pass.

The Tides took over on downs and a few plays later scored on a five-yard touchdown run. The kick failed and the Future Hawks held a slim 7-6 lead.

A good return on the ensuing kickoff had the Future Hawks starting their next drive on their own 46. Ashanti Kindle scored on a running play. They ran a play rather than kick for the extra point. It was unsuccessful, leaving them with a 12-7 lead.

The Future Hawks defense stepped up big on the next Gig Harbor drive, getting a sack on third down and another on fourth on which the Tides quarterback fumbled the ball. Taking over at midfield, the Future Hawks got some good runs out of their wishbone formation. Ashanti Kindle found things wide open on a play running to the right, scampering into the end zone for another score. They ran the ball in for the extra point to make it 20-6.

Charles “Snoopy” Brown recorded a big sack for the Future Hawks on Gig Harbor’s final drive.

The team finished 8-3 on the season.

“They have all grown as a team,” said head coach Robin Robertson. “They have come a long way in understanding the fundamentals.”

He noted his team only turned the ball over three times in their last six games, a remarkable feat for a team running the wishbone, an offense prone to fumbles. “We were able to hold onto the ball,” Robin Robertson said.
