On Sept. 6, the Puyallup Tribe hosted a dinner at Chief Leschi Schools for more than 2,000 elders. The dinner and give-a-way was part of the 2008 National Indian Council on Aging Biennial Con-ference, which was held at the Tacoma Convention Center. Elders from all areas of Indian Country attended and were treated at its best.
Nearly 30 students from Chief Leschi volunteered to help serve the elders. Most were from the middle school and high school, but two daring elementary students joined the forces and worked as hard as anyone.
The students who helped serve were a result of the efforts of Roleen Hargrove and former Chief Leschi principal Leon Strom. They are most appreciated for thinking of Chief Leschi students to help serve elders.
Culture teacher, Cheryl Wapes’a-Mayes, who helped supervise the students, commented, “One of the most significant things that Native children can do is to provide service to their community. It is essential to their social development as vital members of their culture.”
Junior Ali Ahmed
said, “It was a great experience. The work was hard, but I would do it again.” Senior Sara Deer responded, “I had a really great time and I learned a lot from the elders.”
